Who Is Captain "Spicy"?

Captain Stephen "Spicy" Gettel is a Native Oregonian and has been fishing the PNW for 50+ years. As a local kid, he fished mountain lakes and coastal streams mostly for trout and soon migrated to the biggest fish he could find. Experienced in the Columbia River, Tillamook Bay and North Central Off-Shore waters, as well as several of our inland lakes and streams. Captain Stephen is a US Coast Guard Licensed Captain and is First Aid / CPR / AED certified and a member of a consortium.

With 10+ years of direct wilderness survival experience and a lifetime of safety conscientiousness, you are sure to be in secure hands aboard The Fintruder. We are well equipped and that means being prepared if equipment fails.Years of lessons, injuries, ingenuity and testing have made Captain Spicy a valuable resource in any outdoor or safety related situation.

I chose to make Spicy’s Fishing, a Portland fishing guide option, a reality, after 25 years in the manufacturing industry. I have found that family fishing, is a great way for people to spend quality time together and is a way to bring any 2 or more people together for a group experience.

It is an opportunity to board and leave the grind behind. Politics, work, other things that weigh on our hearts and minds heavily, all seem to melt away when on the water huge salmon, giant sturgeon, fresh halibut, dungenous crab and fresh oregon rockfsh.

I want to share this with everyone who has yet to experience it. To educate others about our water, and the very least I can do is to give back to my community by taking veterans and First Responders fishing for free. We do hundreds of hours of volunteer work each year to benefit both our community and fisheries.

We are not your typical guide service. We cater to couples, families and smaller groups. Our focus is to step away from the everyday bs and enjoy some time on the water comfortably. We go against the flow often and have found a niche in the nooks, crannies and away from the crowd areas that are often under fished. This enables us to do things a bit differently, acessing several secret fishing spots while also developing some Niche Salmon fishing in downtown Portland.

We provide all the best fishing tackle and use G. Loomis Rods, Shimano, Okuma, Shortbus Flashers, Hypervis+ and all the top fishing gear available for your fishng trips!

How many times have you seen a boat filled with frowning people? Our goal is to never let that happen on the Fintruder. Family fishing especially, and even life itself ought to be celebrated with gratitude. We fish to have fun, to learn, to teach, to increase awareness, give great lifelong memories and of course to do some catching.

The Fintruder is fully outfitted with a waterproof top, electricity, lighting, a hot water sink, propane stove, heat and an easy flush bucket :)- seats 6 people total. Although we primarily do Salmon trolling, we are very adept at just hunkering down in the weather and letting the fish come to us. We have extensive anchor fishing experience and completely utilize these skills in foul weather (wind permitting).

Guided Fishing Trips

2025 Spring Salmon Fishing Trips Available!

We do Oregon guided fishing Trips for Chinook and Coho salmon, Sturgeon, Bottom fishing, near shore Halibut, and of course Crabbing for Dungeness in the bays and ocean when allowed. We love to Guide Astroia Fishing Trips at Buoy 10 also! Being an Astoria Fishing Guides one of the best parts of the job! All trips require a non-refundable deposit of $100 per seat.

Excursions

Spicy has wilderness survival skills of 20+ years with 10 years of active practice, has been camping and hiking the PNW his whole life and is Red Cross First Aid/ CPR/AED certified.

We do boat in trips for families of up to 5 people. We can cater to most needs including all fishing, camping and cooking gear and even do rates for meal preparations while on your excursion. We currently do trips to the Columbia river on various islands, Timothy Lake on Mt. Hood and are open to finding new places to set up camp and fish, or just camp and explore. These are personally customized trips, designed to fit individual family needs,.

Whale watching, treasure hunting, wild game hunting, plunking camps, photography adventures (as you see I know many good shoots only accessible by boat) are all trips we can do.
